Activity
The research activity of Dr. Sannino deals with the evaluation of cytotoxic and genotoxic effects induced in mammalian cell cultures following exposures to low and high frequency electromagnetic fields (EMF). In particular, the research activity consists in the evaluation of the effects induced in human lymphocytes (proliferating or quiescent) and in mammalian cell lines after exposures to electromagnetic fields at mobile phone frequencies (900 MHz and 1950 MHz), with different signal characteristics (GSM, UMTS) and Specific Absorption Rate (SAR). The experimental activity is carried out by employing different exposure systems (TEM cell, WPC, waveguide), mode and duration (continuous or intermittent exposures). Moreover, Dr Sannino took part in the study about the evaluation of the genotoxic effects of electromagnetic fields in the THz frequency range (130 GHz), while the effects of low-frequency EM fields have been explored by studying the induction of genotoxic effects in human fibroblast non-trasformed cell line following 24 h exposures to a 50 Hz frequency, 1 mT amplitude, magnetic field.Currently, the research activity of Dr Sannino is mainly focused on: Evaluation of the adaptive response induced in human lymphocytes following exposures to RF fields (900 – 1950 MHz), given as adaptive doses, and subsequently treated with high doses of chemical and physical mutagens. Cytogenetic assays (micronucleus with cytokinesis block and comet assay) are employed for the study and characterization of the adaptive response;Evaluation of the cytotoxicity in rat adrenal phaeochromocytoma (PC12) cell line following exposures to 1950 MHz, UMTS signal, RF fields. To this aim, different assays are employed to investigate cell viability by means of microscopic, spectrofluorimetric and fluorimetric techniques (Trypan Blue, Resazurin, Neutral Red). Evaluation of the oxidative stress and apoptosis induction in different mammalian cell lines exposed to RF fields, by applying fluorimetric and cytometric techniques; evaluation of the cytotoxicity induced by multiwalled carbon-nanotubes (buckypaper) and magnetic nanoparticles in mammalian cell cultures by applying fluorimetric techniques and confocal microscopy; evaluation of the cellular and sub-cellular effects induced by high voltage, nanosecond electric pulses in Jurkat cells by means of molecular cytogenetic assays, cytofluorimetry and confocal microscopy. |

Dr Sannino attended the 1st and the 2nd courses of the International School of Bioelectromagnetics “Alessandro Chiabrera” held in Erice (Italy), in 2004 and 2005, respectively, and the training course “Electromagnetic fields: risk and protection” held in Naples, Federico II, in 2006. In 2010, she attended the “11th Practical Intensive Workshop on 3D Canfocal and Multiphoton Microscopy” and the “6th Confocal Microscopy course: theoretical and practical basis”. In 2013, she recived PhD in “Biochemistry and pathology of drug action” at the University of Salerno. Since 2002, she has been working at the Bioelectromagnetics Laboratory of the IREA-CNR, and since 2017 she has been a techical staff. Since July 2022 he has been a Researcher at the same institute. His main interests are in the field of biological effects (genotoxic and cytotoxic) of both low and high frequency electromagnetic fields in mammalian cell cultures. The research activities described above have given rise to articles published in international journals and conference communications.
